Six months exposure of The Kelpies. Leaving my cameras in popular tourist attractions is always the most challenging, finding a spot with an unobstructed view of the subject without drawing any attention requires some creativity.

A failed safety test of the Chernobyl reactor number 4 caused the largest nuclear disaster in history. Today the epicentre of this world-changing event is buried under rubble and protected by the New Safe Confinement, a 100-metre tall steel arch designed to last over 100 years, by this time all deadly radioactive material will have been removed. I captured this image between November 2020 and September 2021, when I installed two more cameras pointed at the power plant. Unfortunately, both were destroyed by the Ukrainian military searching for mines and bombs left by the Russian forces withdrawing to Belarus.

Six months exposure of the iconic Forth Bridge, captured with an empty soft drink can installed on a road sign post. Faint light reflections inside the rolled photosensitive paper added an interesting texture to the final image. Image © Kamil Budzyński 2023

There’s a group of stunted sycamore trees beside the sea at Garlieston, in Galloway I like to sketch. I love their shapes, the flickering light from the leaves and the sound of the sea. In this painting I have focussed on the shapes of the trees in a pared down, invented landscape.

Last winter I was sketching in Toll Wood, by the Tweed in Innerleithen at different times of day. This painting originated in a sketch I made as light was just beginning to creep into the wood at dawn as the river glimmered below. The colours, while somewhat unreal, convey to me a feeling of warmth and peace.

Last March I was exploring the coast of Arran, at Kildonan for the first time and came upon this waterfall coming down from the cliff edge. I was taken by the way it was emerging from the soft shapes of the willows just beginning to show their new leaves.

Last winter I spent time sketching in Toll Wood, by the Tweed in Innerleithen at different times of day. This painting originated in a sketch I made as the sun came up. I enjoyed the shapes of the remnants of a beech hedge, the softness of the hills and fields beyond and the stillness of a pool of water at my feet.

A failed attempt to photograph the Queen Victoria Statue in Dundee turned out much more interesting than anticipated. This photograph was taken between the summer and winter solstice of 2022, the traffic lights pole where I mounted my camera was rotated slightly during that period. As a result of this accidental double exposure, the statue is almost impossible to see.

Decaying bumper cars in Pripyat amusement park, located in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. On the 27th of April 1986, 50,000 residents of Pripyat were evacuated never to return to their homes contaminated with radioactive fallout. The amusement park scheduled to be open on the 1st of May 1986 remains unused to this day. This photograph was taken between September 2021 and October 2022. A once-in-a-lifetime chance to capture the sun's path on the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

For once, the never-ending roadworks in Edinburgh have proven useful. I simply couldn't ignore temporary traffic lights installed conveniently right in front of the Greyfriars Bobby statue, which gave me a chance to capture this famous dog. The good boy is still waiting for his owner as the sun sets behind him daily.

Seven months exposure of Wojtek the Soldier Bear statue in Duns. Different colour hues of the sun trails during summer and winter months are a common effect, as temperature and humidity affect the photosensitive paper inside the camera.

Many Scottish kings found their final resting place in Dunfermline Abbey and watch the sun slowly travel across the sky above their graves. This photograph was taken between May and January, capturing the summer and winter solstice.

After several failed attempts to photograph the Forth Bridges, I finally captured over 6 months of sun paths over the Firth of Forth. Note to self - always check how far the high tide reaches before leaving the camera!

This was my third attempt to photograph the Falkirk Wheel, and with the manager's permission to install my camera in plain sight, I captured exactly 153 days in one image. As the arms of the wheel revolve, the sun appears to be shining right through the structure in several spots.

Newlands Old Kirk, nine months exposure taken between September 2020 and June 2021. I covered my camera in camouflage tape and installed it on the old stone wall surrounding the grounds.
